This two-part course will present intra-oral dental assistants/hygienists with relevant technical knowledge and skills the intra-oral orthodontic dental assistant/hygienist is expected to perform. The dental assistant/hygienist will learn to assist the orthodontist in the planning and execution of clinical procedures. The specific procedures include the supervision of occlusal development and treatment of conditions of dental facial disharmony. 

Intra-Oral Distance Orthodontics: Theory is the first component of the course. Students will be given three months of home study to prepare for the exam. Upon successful completion of the theoretical exam, a certificate will be issued for this course. After successful completion of this course, students may register for the Practical Course. The Theory Course is a prerequisite for the Practical Course. 

Learning Outcomes

  • Obtaining adequate orthodontic records, including impression making, model trimming, bite registration and clinical photography 
  • Placing separators in preparation for banding of teeth. 
  • Fitting and cementation or orthodontic bands and removal. 
  • Bonding orthodontic attachments and removal. 
  • Placement and removal or orthodontic archwires. 
  • Placement and removal of various types of orthodontic ligatures. 
  • Instructing patients in proper use of inter arch elastics. 
  • Instructing patients in proper use of retainers. 
  • Instructing patients in proper use of removable orthodontic appliances. 
  • Infection control and sterilization in the orthodontic office. 

Students are only able to register for a course after they have completed the prerequisites:

  • Current Level II Intra-Oral Dental Assisting license for the province in which the student will be working or current Dental Hygiene license for the province in which the student will be working.
  • In order to be licensed in your province as an orthodontic assistant, you are required to complete both the Holland ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ Intra-Oral Distance Orthodontic-Theory Course and Holland ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ Intra-Oral Distance Orthodontic-Practicum Course. Students are required to check with their licensing body before registering for this course.
  • The scope of intra-oral orthodontic skills varies from province to province, therefore it is the responsibility of the applicant to confer with your provincial licensing authority to determine requirements in your province.
  • This distance education course allows students to register at any time and is not subject to student application numbers. Students have three months from the registration date to complete the theory and then write the exam. A mark of 75% must be achieved.
  • Students will be enrolled as a Holland ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ student for a total of 3 months. The Practicum Course must be completed within one year of the completion date of the Theory Course, otherwise students will be required to redo the Theory Course.
  • Completion of this course alone will not meet licensure requirements. Both theory and practical courses must be successfully completed, and certificates for both must be presented to your licensing body for licensure.
  • You must also complete the Holland ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ Intra-Oral Distance Orthodontic Practicum Course to meet license requirements in P.E.I., New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • You must be supervised by an orthodontist for the Practicum Course.
