Chris Bailey, a graduate of Holland ¼â½ÐÊÓƵ's Graphic Design program, was recently named a regional winner in the competition. His "Fisherman's Repose" submission has earned him a $7,500 cash prize.
The BMO 1st Art! competition celebrates the creativity of art school students from over 100 post-secondary institutions across Canada. The national winner is awarded $15,000 and the regional winners each receive $7,500. Every year BMO Financial Group invites the deans and instructors of an undergraduate-level certificate, diploma, or degree programs in studio art to select three graduating students whose ability and imagination place them first among their peers.
Through CMYK print on foam core PVC panel, Bailey’s piece is a depiction of his father. It captures a quiet moment for a man who has worked hard his whole life and, at 69, is looking to step out of the profession he's been in since he was 13.
Graphic Design instructor April Condon said she is proud to have Chris represent P.E.I. on a national stage.
"Chris possesses an uncommon combination of skills. He is a writer, poet, fisherman, and graphic designer. Seeing him utilize his graphic design skills to help illustrate authentic stories that often focus on self-reflection, family, and life on PEI is wonderful. He is very deserving of such an honour," she said.
