One of the region’s most popular bands will be playing in the Florence Simmons Performance Hall Saturday, October 15, when The East Pointers hit the stage to promote their debut album, Secret Victory.
The album features 10 new original tracks written by guitarist Jake Charron, and cousins Tim and Koady Chaisson, members of Prince Edward Island’s reigning musical dynasty, and brings into focus a unique fusion of traditional and contemporary music.
For fiddler Tim Chaisson, whose solo career has garnered a loyal following, The East Pointers are indeed pointing East, to new directions for traditional music. Almost without even trying, the trio makes traditional music seem ridiculously hip.
“That’s something The East Pointers are trying to accomplish – breathe some new, original life into traditional music,” he said. “A lot of times, people think of it as music for an older generation but we’re hoping to introduce a whole new generation of listeners.”
The East Pointers have been traveling the world for the past year promoting their album and explosive live show. They have spent time touring in Australia, the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States, and Canada. The group won the 2016 Music PEI Touring Artist of the Year Award, the 2016 Edmonton Folk Festival Best Emerging Artist of the Year Award, 2015 Music PEI New Artist of the Year and Roots Traditional Recording of the Year awards, and have just been nominated for Instrumental Group of the Year and Ensemble of the Year at the 2016 Canadian Folk Music Awards.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the box office by calling 902-894-6885 or online at .
