Women’s basketball player Karissa George and men’s basketball player Aaron Simmons have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 2, 2025.

George, a rookie guard and multi-sport athlete from New Glasgow, N.S., earned Hurricanes Female Athlete of the Week honours and Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honours for the second time this season after helping her team advance to the championship game at the 2025 ACAA Basketball Championships in Saint John, N.B.

On Saturday, in Holland’s 70-56 semifinal win over Mount Allison, George recorded four points, a perfect 2-for-2 free-throw record, two rebounds, one assist, and one steal. On Sunday, in Holland’s 72-62 championship final loss to MSVU, George scored eight points, a 2-for-8 field-goal record, a 4-for-5 free-throw record, four assists, two rebounds, two steals, and one block. Her performance on Sunday earned her Hurricanes Player of the Game honours. Congratulations on a fantastic first season as a Hurricane, Karissa!

The women’s basketball Hurricanes’ season is complete after a 14-4 regular season (second ranked) and runner-up finish at the ACAA Championships.

Simmons, a second-year and graduating guard from Nassau, Bahamas, earned Hurricanes Male Athlete of the Week honours for the fourth time this season and Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honours for the fifth time.

In a valiant semifinal effort against the hosting UNBSJ Seawolves at the 2025 ACAA Basketball Championships, which ended in a 78-68 loss, Simmons led his team with 19 points, a 9-for-19 field-goal record, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. His performance earned him Hurricanes Player of the Game honours.

He was also named to the 2024-25 ACAA Men’s Basketball Second All-Conference Team. Thank you for an outstanding two seasons on the court, Aaron!

The men’s basketball Hurricanes’ season is done after a 13-5 regular season (second ranked) and a loss in the ACAA Championship semi-finals.

• Third-year guard Lauren Armstrong, who was named the 2024-25 ACAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Year and to the First All-Conference Team.
• Fifth-year forward Alexa Rancourt, who was named to the 2024-25 ACAA Women’s Basketball First All-Conference Team.
• Rookie guard Nykeva Brown, who was named the 2024-25 ACAA Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year and to the Second All-Conference Team.
• Fifth-year guard Bryce Corless, who was named to the 2024-25 ACAA Men’s Basketball First All-Conference Team.
